Meet Luke & Mary Matelan
In September 2024, Hurricane Helene destroyed Luke and Mary Matelan's home in St. Petersburg. Like so many families in their community, they and their two young children found themselves facing the difficult process of starting over.
With his background in construction and Mary's encouragement, Luke decided to take on the responsibility of building a new home for their family. The project was a success, and what began as a necessity ultimately led Luke to pursue something he had dreamed about since childhood: starting his own construction company.
The experience gave Luke and Mary a different perspective on the homebuilding process. Luke had spent his career managing complex construction projects and advising some of the largest construction companies in the country, while Mary had built her career as a physician assistant in plastic surgery, where personal attention, trust, and attention to detail are essential. Despite their professional experience, they now found themselves navigating the homebuilding process as homeowners, making decisions that directly affected their family, their finances, and their future.
Their vision was to create a company that combines the discipline and professionalism of large construction organizations with the personal attention and accountability that homeowners deserve. A company where clients understand the process, know where their money is going, and feel comfortable asking questions and making decisions along the way.
Mary Matelan | Marketing & Growth
Mary is originally from Dayton, Ohio and has called St. Petersburg home since 2007. She earned her undergraduate degree from Florida State University and her Physician Assistant degree from Nova Southeastern University.
As a board certified Physician Assistant specializing in plastic surgery, Mary brings years of experience in personalized service, client relationships, and attention to detail.
With a natural eye for elegant design, she leads marketing and new business growth at Matelan Construction, helping shape the company's brand and overall client experience.
Luke Matelan | Founder & CEO
Luke's introduction to construction began at an early age, working alongside his father in the family carpentry business. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he went on to attend Youngstown State University on a Division I football scholarship, where he studied Civil Engineering and Mathematics.
Luke began his professional career managing bridge and infrastructure projects in the rail industry, including overseeing the design of a major terminal expansion. He has spent much of the past decade advising some of the largest construction companies in the country on strategy, business operations, and project delivery, which he now overesees for Matelan Construction.
Luke resides in St. Petersburg with his wife, Mary, and their three children, Mila, Laila, and Gemma. When he is not on the jobsite, he enjoys spending time with his family, maintaining an active lifestyle and is an active parishioner at St Raphael's Catholic Church.
